Research Scholarships

In addition to the many research scholarships and awards available to students at the University of Newcastle, the Faculty has in place a range of scholarships for student researchers at every level:

Faculty Undergraduate Summer Scholarships
(2012/13 applications closed 12 October 2012)

An Undergraduate Summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research.

  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in 2nd or 3rd year of any program offered by the Faculty of Science and Information Technology.
  • Applicants must not have previously received this scholarship.
  • Scholarships are valued at $2,000 each.  Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement during the period November 2012 to the end of the mid-semester break in Semester 1 2013.
  • Applicants can apply for up to three (3) preferences from the list of summer research topics available for 2012/13.  Applicants are advised to contact the prospective Supervisor /s prior to submitting an application for a Summer scholarship.
  • Applicants must apply online by midnight on Friday 12th October 2012.

Faculty Undergraduate Visiting Scholarships
(2012/13 applications closed 12 October 2012)

An undergraduate Visiting Summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments.  Research areas of interest are available in the eight (8) Priority Research Centres and numerous Research Groups and Centres within the four (4) Schools.

  • Applications are invited from undergraduate students currently enrolled in 2nd or  3rd year of a Science or IT related program at an Australian University.
  • Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Scholarship consists of a $2,000 stipend for 6 week placement during the period  the 2012/13 Summer period December 2012 – February 2012), 6 weeks accommodation (if required),  and return transportation within Australia.
  • Applicants can apply for a research topic from the list of summer research topics available for 2012/13.
  • Applicants must apply by completing the ‘2012/13 Visiting Summer Scholarship Application Form’ by Friday 12th October 2012.

Faculty Honours Scholarships
(2013 applications close 12 October 2012)

An Honours program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with the necessary experience and knowledge working closely with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.

  • Honours scholarships are available for students entering an Honours program full-time in Semester 1, 2013 offered by the Faculty of Science & IT.
  • Scholarships are valued at $2,000 each.
  • Applicant must apply online by midnight on Friday 12th October 2012

Faculty Research Training Scholarships (Honours and Provisional RHD)

(2013 applications closing date extended to 12 October 2012)

The Faculty Research Training Scholarship is established to encourage and support students entering an Honours program full-time in Semester 1 2013 and who progress to enrol in a Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in 2014 offered by the Faculty of Science and IT.  Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.

In 2013, the Faculty will award up to six (6) Research Training Scholarships which consists of:

  • A Honours scholarship is valued at $2,000 per student, and
  • A provisional offer of UNRSC (PUNRSC - Provisional University of Newcastle Research Scholarship Central) for 2014, subject to the student achieving Honours Class One and supervision and resources being available to support the proposed research.
  • Applicants must apply online by midnight on Friday 12th October 2012.  A written statement from an academic or potential Honours Supervisor on progress in your undergraduate program is also required.

Faculty Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award
(2012 applications close 7 October 2011)

The Faculty of Science and IT Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award is available to an RHD candidate undertaking a full-time research Master's or PhD degree within the Faculty of Science and Information Technology. Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.

  • Applicant must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and an Australian Citizen.
  • Successful applicants will receive a living allowance (AUD$23,728 per annum in 2012) for the duration of the scholarship. This period is three (3) years for a PhD degree or two (2) years for a Master's degree by research.
  • Applications close on 31 October 2012

Faculty RHD Conference Scholarships

The Research Higher Degree Student Conference Scholarship provides Faculty support for Master of Philosophy by Research or PhD candidates of the Faculty to participate in an International Conference/Exhibition in order to present their research to the international community.

  • Only one (1) Scholarship will be awarded to any one applicant during the term of their candidature, and will not be awarded to candidates retrospectively.
  • Scholarship is restricted to Conferences/Exhibitions, which are organized by an International Committee (whether in Australia or Overseas).
  • Applicants should have authored, co-authored a refereed scientific article(s) or exhibited at a significant venue (solo or group).

The Faculty Research and Research Training Committee views these Scholarships as being prestigious, so its award should be included on the testamur and could be used in student Curriculum Vitae's.
