Statistical Support Service
The Statistical Support Service (SSS) provides advice on statistical methods to help university students and staff engaged in research. It has the objectives of maintaining the high quality of quantitative research at Newcastle University and improving the statistical skills of researchers. The service is open to all Newcastle University researchers including conjoint staff. See the guidelines for use as to eligibility for free and subsidised support.
To ensure an effective service is provided equitably within limited resources to all members of the university each application for an appointment will need to be carefully assessed. The SSS supports a wide range of researchers: from staff preparing grant proposals to those currently enrolled students undertaking research at an Honours level.
Ideally statistical advice should be requested at the initial planning and design stage of the project. Large projects preparing budgets will require cost estimates of advice, design and analysis. Statistical advice can help at all stages of a project, and several appointments at each stage including the final writing up should be envisioned. If you have a deadline please note this on your application for an appointment.
The service is heavily used and in busy periods delays of up to 2 to 3 weeks might be experienced before you can see a consultant, so please plan well in advance and make your bookings early. Do not leave your urgent requirements until the last minute expecting that we will be able to see you quickly.
