Students to make an impact at the Real Film Festival

Six films created by communication students as part of an assessment have been selected to screen at next month's Real Film Festival.

The short documentaries were made as part of the Bachelor of Communication coursework and submitted to ABC Open, following the guidelines and conditions set out by the ABC initiative.

The student films will feature in the Short Film Section at the Newcastle Museum on Sunday 4 August from midday.

The films are:

  • A Day in the Life of a Volunteer Fire Fighter - by Jaime-Maree Kelly, Sasha Zajac, Emily Steele
  • Kyle Middleton Mototrials Rider - by Sam Carmen, Jack Kavanagh, Brett Griesberg and Matt Willis
  • A Life in Hapikido - by John Redmond, Sean Renwick, Gregory O'Regan, Daniel Sparrow
  • The G Man - by David Fulham, Sam Blomley
  • Newcastle Ice Skater - by James Morello, Ashlee King and Rebekah Grujevski
  • A Day in the Life of an Artist - by Matthew Hatton

The Real Film Festival is an initiative of Screen Hunter Central Coast and was developed to encourage the art of portraying real events through film.

Event organisers contacted ABC Open for student films to feature in this year's festival. Second-year student, Jaime-Maree Kelly, said she was ecstatic when she received the news that her film would run during the Festival.

"It was amazing news and I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to show my first film at the Real Film Festival. I told my whole family and have invited them all to the show as well. I am so excited!" said Jaime-Maree.

"I am hoping to make more short films with my friends sometime in the near future, it is invigorating," she added.

The whole process was also very well received by student John Redmond.

"The experience was invaluable. We learnt about the whole production process including scripting, interviewing, camerawork, sound design and editing. We'd been encouraged to treat this as a professional project and for it to be screened at a film festival was great news," said John.

Communication staff are also impressed with the student achievements.

"These screenings are a wonderful outcome for first-year video work and the students should be congratulated," said Deputy Program Convenor, Dr Susan Kerrigan.

The Festival is being sponsored by the Hunter Creative Industries Technology Research Centre.
