2013 Teaching and Learning Project Grants Awarded
Teaching and Learning project grants have been awarded for 2013. Within the Faculty, Dr Geoff Skinner and Judy-Anne Osborne will receive up to $10,000 to promote and support the development of their team initiatives to enhance the quality of teaching and learning and the overall student experience at the University of Newcastle.
Dr Geoff Skinner’s grant will go towards launching a pilot study on virtual cloud environments for delivery of adaptive pre-course content related knowledge modules. The project will create an online environment for students to access pre-course materials, program-related modules and interact with cloud computing technologies to enhance the quality and accessibility of virtual teaching environments.
The modules will focus on assisting students that lack the necessary technical background knowledge and skills for each course. It is also hoped that International Student difficulties with the subject will be reduced.
Dr Judy-Anne Osborne and her team aim to implement online learning systems in Mathematics. Their proposal outlined the rapid growth of computerised assessments in Mathematical Sciences and the need to develop online systems to provide real-time feedback and communication with students.
A new system will be implemented into the first year Mathematics course MATH1110 for the first time in 2013. This project aims at transforming the student experience of first year mathematics to become more engaged, confident and competent.
Projects commence in February and teams will present their findings at the end of the year.
