Welcome to the first edition of Micro-byte for 2013. I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break and had a chance to spend some quality time with loved ones after a busy and successful year.  With each New Year comes change and in 2013 the University will begin implementing a number of strategies to align with the Vice Chancellor’s vision.

In December 2012, Vice Chancellor Professor Caroline McMillen announced the strategic plans for the University of Newcastle over the coming years. NeW Directions is a response to the changing landscape and plans to position the University as a global leader in education, research and innovation by 2025.

The Faculty’s plans are in line with these ambitious targets and I look forward to working with staff to raise our profile with industries and communities around the globe.

Our Faculty had many notable achievements in 2012 which was evident at a number of events and award ceremonies. Along with Laureate Professor John Aitken being named NSW Scientist of the Year, a number of staff were recognised for their hard work across areas such as research, student teaching and community engagement.

Our students were also a stand out and their achievements were recognised at local, state and national levels. Vincent Candrawinata won the University 3 Minute Thesis and as you’ll read in this edition, four Communication students were winners of the national ABC Heywire competition.

It will be a challenge to achieve the goals set for 2013-2015 and beyond, but by building on our already established foundations, we will work towards setting new standards and raising the University’s profile for future prosperity.
