Students work with internationally renowned designer

The intricate world of graphic design and the fascinating aspects of entertainment were showcased to students last month when Jeffrey Julian visited the University as part of a guest lecture. The talented designer and art director is renowned for his work on Hollywood films such as I Am Legend, X-Men 3 and Green Lantern along with developing advertisements for Audi and Oakley.

Students studying Visual Communication Design were told first-hand about the process of invention and creativity and how it related to working for major design houses.

Following the lecture, Jeff also lead a one-day workshop, setting the task for students to design a fantasy pet or anything that could change human behaviour. The wide scope of the task meant students could think about style and build on techniques that had been covered in class and in the lecture.

Roger Quinn, a Design lecturer, said that Jeff’s visit covered new concepts of entertainment and built on the existing principles within the program. He also added that those who attended the lecture and workshop left motivated and inspired.

“Jeff’s visit set off a spark of enthusiasm among students. It took a workshop like that to turn the light on. He helped explain the concept of external design and having exposure to someone with the professional level of Jeff is an incredibly rare opportunity,” said Roger.

There are plans for Jeff to return to the University in the near future and provide feedback on the projects that students completed in the workshop.
