Student works on the big screen

The Newcastle Film Society will be screening student films at Tower Cinemas over the next few weeks.

The film society handed out two annual awards to University of Newcastle students earlier this month during the Design, Communication and Information Technology prize ceremony.

This year the awards were named after former society member, the late Margaret Goumas and her husband Theo who is still a member.

Alexandra Noy was awarded the Goumas Prize for Communication – Screen Production valued at $500 for achieving the highest GPA in the Media Production major offered in the Bachelor of Communication.

The $1000 Goumas Prize for Communication – Best Film Created in the Final Year went to Nicholas Allan, Christopher Beavon, Charlie Rodgers and Guy Bevan for their film One Last Dance.

A total of five student films were nominated for the award and all are being screened at Tower Cinemas by the film society over the coming weeks, concluding on May 12 with One Last Dance.

The music video Curtains created by Alexandra Noy and Cassandra Blok was screened on April 14.

Synopsis: A film editor endures a mental breakdown during the editing of his latest film.

One Last Dance (Drama, 6 minutes)

Synopsis: When a donation is left at a small town museum two mannequins are brought to life but are unable to reach each other until the curator neglects to lock their cases.
