International Operations
Engaging The World
The University's mission is to educate its students for the "professions". In promoting this, our Faculty recognises that its graduates need to envisage opportunities for employment on a global level. Our graduates need to work effectively within all cultures, societies and language frameworks. We therefore seek to welcome students from all continents to raise awareness among local students as well as to provide international students with an Australian learning experience.
We have opportunities for international students to undertake full undergraduate degree programs in Australia, as well as Study Abroad and Exchange programs. For those international students unable to come to our Australian campuses, we provide online and offshore learning experiences.
Teaching Partnerships
Our Faculty has been investigating and developing teaching partnerships with a number of institutions in Asia. Chinese partner institutions include Jiangxi Agricultural University in Biotechnology and Information Technology degree programs. In Indonesia, we have links with the Universitas Pelita Harapan for our Food Science and Human Nutrition degree program.
We have articulation agreements with a number of institutions including the Advanced Institute of Information Technology-IEN from the Republic of Korea, which allows IT Diploma graduates from that institution advanced standing in our Bachelor of Information Technology.
Research Links
By its very nature, research is international, and we are educating the next generation of global research leaders. We aim to have a graduate footprint in every corner of the globe.
Our Faculty is research-intensive and has numerous international links with researchers on every continent of the globe, including Europe, South Africa, India, China, North America and Latin America. Our academics are members of the following priority research centres:
- Organic Electronics
- Reproductive Science
- Advance Particle Processing
- Complex Dynamic System Control
- Energy
- Brain and Mental Health
Our Faculty also houses the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment, which has research higher degree students from Indonesia, China, Singapore, Europe, Malaysia, North America, Botswana, Latin America, England and India.
Offshore Study Opportunities in Singapore
We are proud of our links with our offshore study partners. We believe that these links provide our students not only with the best of both worlds, but also a greater focus on creating professional graduates who are job-ready and have transferable skills.
We offer the Bachelor of Information Technology, taught in conjunction with our partners PSB Academy in Singapore, in two modes: full-time and a part-time accelerated program. The objective of the accelerated program is to upgrade the skills and knowledge of IT diploma graduates to a professional level in the area of Information Technology Applications.
This has been a very popular degree with students able to upskill and develop their knowledge base in the ever-expanding global IT industry. The full-time program is also available to those without an IT diploma and offers a double major in Business Information Systems and Information Technology Applications. Graduates will thus not only have comprehensive IT skills but will also have a good grounding in business and management.
Applicants who are interested in studying at the University of Newcastle in Singapore can find more at University's Singapore website.
In August 2007, the Faculty will offer the full time Bachelor of Communication with a double major in Journalism and Public Relations at PSB Academy.
Study and Travel – the Best of Both Worlds
We believe that the best way to enhance your future opportunities as a graduate is to take advantage of the opportunities to engage with the world. There are many benefits to travelling while you are studying. On top of making new friends and having fun, you are getting a broader experience and worldview of your discipline, learning to negotiate living in a new and different environment as well as managing your studies.
The Faculty has many reciprocal arrangements with Universities across the globe in Asia, Europe and the Americas. You can study for up to two semesters overseas and, provided that you chose appropriate courses, you will also be able to count those courses back towards your degree at the University of Newcastle. You may also be eligible for financial assistance in the form of Student Exchange Scholarships that you can use towards airfares, living expenses and accommodation. More information on 'Overseas Exchange for Australian Students' is available on our current students site.
Coming to Newcastle with Study Abroad
We encourage students from overseas universities to consider coming to the University of Newcastle on exchange. Our Faculty has an extremely broad range of courses on offer from the sciences (eg. biological science, chemistry, physics and mathematics) to communication, design and information technology. Many of our courses are without significant prerequisites and assumed knowledge, therefore ideal for incoming Study Abroad and Exchange students to pick up.
Field trips and excursions in areas such as earth sciences, environmental science, marine science and natural history illustration means that you will also have the opportunity to get out and see the Hunter Valley up close. Travel and study make a great combination. For more information, please see Study Abroad.
