Mature Age Students

As a mature age student you will have had life experiences that give you a different perspective to study. The issues and challenges you are most likely to encounter will be different from the problems that arise for school leavers. The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment acknowledges that mature age students bring a wealth of life skills with them, enriching the educational experience for other students and staff. We welcome your interest and potential enrolment.

We also understand that successful study often depends on good support. As a faculty we provide ongoing assistance from the student services staff and program coordinators who are committed to supporting students. The University as a whole supports mature age students with a special "Back to Study" workshop, held at the beginning of each semester.

Topics included are:

  • Resources you bring
  • Study skills
  • Combining family and personal responsibilities with study
  • Self help strategies

For mature age students who want to study at tertiary level and do not have the usual qualifications needed for University entry, the Open Foundation program offered at Newcastle is an excellent way of gaining entry to University study. It helps students to develop the skills needed for successful study at tertiary level, putting you at the same level as students entering directly from school. Students undertake either a 6 month intensive or 12 month part-time course. Applicants must be 20 years of age or over and be Australian Citizens or have permanent residency.
