Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School
What is IAESS?
The Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School is an annual event that was established in 1998 by Engineering Aid. It's a seven day live-in Summer School, featuring a combination of activities that gives Indigenous students entering into Years 10, 11 and 12 a taste of engineering as a university course and career.
Who established the program?
Engineering Aid, a philanthropic organisation, provides engineers and related services to assist disadvantaged communities both in Australia and overseas. The Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School is their principal program on behalf of Indigenous Young Australians.
Objectives of the program
The objectives of IAESS are to:
• Provide a challenging environment for Indigenous students to discover the benefits of the Engineering profession.
• Provide a forum for students to meet engineering role models.
• Gain insights into the opportunities engineering can provide to so many communities.
Where is IAESS held?
IAESS is held annually at universities around Australia. In 2012, Engineering Aid Australia will hold two summer schools, at Curtin University in Western Australia and at the University of Sydney. The location for the 2013 event is yet to be announced, watch this space for more information.
The University of Newcastle was the host of IAESS in 2008 and 2009. Check out our gallery of the 2008 summer school to see the range of exciting academic, social and cultural activities that our students took part in.
