Professor Kevin Galvin, Ian Wark MedallistGoogle-sponsored CS4HS: Computer Science Workshop for High School Teachers

Would you like to help inspire the next generation of computer scientists?

The University of Newcastle invites career advisors and mathematics, IT and science teachers to take part in this free, three-day workshop.

The workshop will provide you with the tools and latest information to engage your students with computer science concepts and applications, including:

  • Background information on computer science basics, tools and trends
  • Examples of the applications of computer science to significant real world problems
  • Up-to-date information on the employment opportunities in the field
  • Hands-on activities to demonstrate the applications of computer science

    Workshop outline

nubotsDay 1 – An introduction to Computer Science
Through a series of hands-on activities, discover the processes of modelling problems and programming and how these apply to current technologies, including Web2.0 and mobile technologies. The session will highlight the key role of computer science in different areas of science such as personalised medicine and robotics.

Day 2 – Applications of Computer Science
Gain insight into the immense range of computer science applications through presentations from senior scientists and researchers from the University and a guest speaker from Google. They will discuss mobile and web technologies, robotics, molecular biology, understanding diseases, business applications, data mining, data analytics, security, engineering, health, computer games. There will be an emphasis on applications that are interesting for girls.

Day 3 – Hands on activities
Experience for yourself some of the applications of computer science. Participate in a research group, developing lessons and projects for high school students to help change their perceptions of computer science.
