Teaching Writing Well: Developing Integrated Writing-intensive Instruction in Australian Universities
The Writing Centre website is the resource centre and networking site for the Teaching Writing Well Project. This project was developed by Dr Dianne Osland and Dr Rosalind Smith to develop writing-intensive instruction at the University of Newcastle. It fosters the acquisition of good written communication skills, both as an end in itself and as a means of achieving other learning outcomes. Students now arrive at university with diverse levels of educational preparedness, and this project aims to raise the standard of students' writing in order to meet the intellectual challenges of critical thinking and deep learning.
We have adapted international best practice in writing pedagogy to local needs and constraints, and are developing a coordinated and sustainable model to integrate writing-intensive teaching and learning practices into the core curriculum of different disciplines across the institution. We are also interested in developing a collaborative community of practice centred on the teaching of writing across the university.
The Writing Centre is currently conducting trials that embed writing-intensive instruction into courses run by Nursing, Biomedical Science and the Humanities.
