Welcome to the Faculty of Education and Arts at the University of Newcastle.
We are the largest Faculty at the University and offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degree programs that provide innovative and leading edge education to students from across the globe.
As part of our scholarly community, you will be joining over 9000 fellow students, and a global network of almost 40,000 alumni-graduates with a reputation for their professionalism, social responsiveness, and scholarship excellence.
We have around 400 Research Higher Degree (MPhil & PhD) candidates, a third of whom are international students.
We are highly respected for our teaching quality and our learning methods are designed to ensure graduates have high-level professional skills and are work-ready. Our teaching is delivered through three Schools:
- School of Creative Arts (formerly School of Drama, Fine Art & Music)
- School of Education
- School of Humanities and Social Science
At the undergraduate level, we offer the country's largest and most comprehensive Teacher Education programs and professional education in Social Work and Speech Pathology. In the liberal arts, humanities and social sciences, we offer Music, Drama, Fine Art, Film, Media & Cultural Studies, Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History & Classical Languages, Community Welfare, English & Writing, History, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Sociology, Philosophy Religion and Theology.
At the postgraduate level, we offer a range of Graduate Certificate and Masters awards in Applied Linguistics, Disability Studies, Early Childhood Education, Educational Studies, Leadership and Management in Education, Music Technology, Social Change and Development, Social Science, Specialist Education, Teaching, and Theology.
Evidence of our high-quality staff and research strengths can been seen through our Priority Research Centre and Research Institutes, our success in obtaining prestigious research grants and fellowships, and our prolific publication output. In 2010, through the Federal Government research assessment exercise known as ERA, we achieved the highest research rankings in the country for Religion and Religious Studies and Social Work, and our researchers in Film, Television and Digital Media, Historical Studies, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Sociology, and Specialist Studies in Education, were all ranked as world class.
