Careers
The Faculty is currently liaising with the University's Careers Unit with regards to organising workshops for Faculty students located on the Callaghan Campus, on topics such as, Resume writing and soft skill competencies (interview techniques). The Faculty will keep you informed of developments.
The Faculty advises that the Careers Unit also offer students one-on-one or group sessions, by appointment, on topics such as, checking your job applications, job interview techniques and practice, career choice, career planning and the transition between study and work. Group Work
The Faculty advises that a document for members of Faculty staff is currently being developed. This document will act as a resource tool for staff on developing and providing practical, motivational and functional group work sessions to Faculty students. Once the document is finalised it will be available on the Faculty's Teaching and Learning Website.
The Faculty is also in the process of creating a document to be distributed to all students, which will provide information regarding their obligations while participating in group work sessions, as well as the benefits students can obtain by working in groups.
Language Communication
Peer Assisted Student Support (PASS) is an important part of the Faculty's student learning centre. PASS provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study sessions led by PASS Leaders. These leaders are successful students having already completed the course receiving a higher than Distinction average in it. They are trained in group facilitation and learning techniques and the concepts of promoting a learning community.
The Faculty advises that as part of the PASS Program, PASS leaders will provide business language assistance to students, in courses that students have identified as having difficulty in understanding the business language.
Social Interaction
The Faculty is currently liaising with Eric Shi in organising a mixed basket ball match between Chinese students and staff members of the Faculty. An email has been forwarded to all staff of the Faculty seeking expressions of interest to participate in the match, which is likely to take the week commencing 20 July 2009. The Faculty will confirm a date and time with students shortly. The Faculty will also arrange for light refreshments to be available after the event
Teaching and Learning
The Faculty advises that if students are finding it difficult to understand handwritten course notes provided to them by their lecturers, it is important that they contact the Faculty - emma.blair@newcastle.edu.au and advise the Faculty of which course, handwritten notes are being used. The Faculty can then arrange for the handwritten notes to be typed and distributed to those students experiencing difficulties.
Tutorials and Duty Tutoring
The Faculty advises that regular tutorials are offered in 2000 level accounting and 3000 tax courses. In addition duty tutoring is offered.
Duty Tutors are also available for students requiring extra tuition assistance. Duty Tutors are specifically trained tutors within the Faculty who are able to support students having any difficulties with course content or assessment tasks. The service is available to students on a drop-in basis, is offered at flexible times and is supported by email contact availability (dates and times of the availability of Duty Tutors are noted in student course outlines).
The Faculty advises that Duty Tutors are currently being under utilised by students and encourages all students experiencing difficulties within their courses to utilise this service.
The Faculty will continue to monitor this matter and in future, if further tuition is required by students in the certain courses, the Faculty will look at increasing the number of duty tutorials offered to students.
