Meet Some of Our International Alumni

Nan Jia (Amy) - Beijing China Master of Marketing (2004)

Amy Jia's experience in the field of official and commercial media has been enhanced by her academic study for a Master of Marketing from the University of Newcastle in Australia. Her role as the General Manager of the China Environmental Protection Report Website and Director of the website of the China News Culture Promotion Association requires a high level of skill, expertise and dedication.

The comprehensive role requires Amy to form and maintain networks of resources that include government officials, experts and news reporters, manage personnel systems and budgets as well as leading and supervising overall work on the busy websites. Her work is highly respected and has already attracted significant investment.

Chaturawat Srisukwatana - Thailand
Master of Applied Finance (2003)

Chaturawat Srisukwatana chose to study a Master of Applied Finance at the University of Newcastle for its reputation for quality teaching, the affordable cost of living and because of an elective important to him - personal finance.

After graduating Chaturawat embarked on an academic career at Naresuan University in Thailand, then changed direction and is now a senior credit risk analyst with the Export and Import Bank of Thailand. He is responsible for constructing an internal credit risk model and loan portfolio management where his biggest challenge is a project of Basel II that forces banks to develop their own credit model.

"As the sub prime crisis spreads throughout the world, my challenge is to deploy my body of knowledge from my master's degree to overcome credit loss problems while at the same time generating a more precise forecasting model to accurately assess credit risk. I would like to pursue PhD studies with an emphasis on constructing a more sophisticated credit risk model."

James M.X. Jiang - China Master of Common Law (2000), Bachelor of Laws (2002)

As one of the first students in a joint legal education program between the University of Newcastle in Australia and Nankai University in China, James M.X. Jiang, seized the opportunity to further his study in Newcastle, an experience he credits as one of the most important decisions of his life. He says the innovative teaching methods attracted him to the beautiful bushland campus where he completed a Master of Common Law and a Bachelor of Laws.

Now conducting his own business in Beijing, providing Australian legal, immigration and investment services, James is dedicated to making his company the most professional one of its type in China. He is also keenly keeping himself up-to-date with developments in Australian immigration law.

"Before studying Australian law at the University of Newcastle, I had very little knowledge about law, even Chinese law. I had a dual challenge - to understand the legal principles of Common law and to keep improving my English skills at the same time. It has proved to be very rewarding career. My education in Australia at the University of Newcastle is of great value to me."

Loh Thian Tat - Malaysia Master of Business Administration (2003)

Loh Thian Tat leads a busy life. After achieving a Master of Business Administration through the University of Newcastle in conjunction with Wira Institute in Malaysia, he is now an Area Account Manager for Levi Strauss in Malaysia. Loh oversees accounts with an estimated annual turnover of $55 million and also supervises account executives who cover East Malaysia and South Malaysia.

A driving force in his career is an aspiration to be a successful business manager who can guide a company to be a market leader in its class. He credits his MBA from the University of Newcastle for giving him the opportunity, confidence, skills and knowledge to achieve this.

"I work in a highly competitive industry. This is where my business skills are very important and can make a huge difference. My MBA has enabled me to build a successful working career and has also taught me the skills to balance that career with the demands of my young family."

LAI Tze May - Malaysia
Master of Business Administration (2001)

After a successful career in the financial industry then working as a business consultant in the financial and management field in Malaysia, May Tze Lai started her own company as a consultant to the marine aquaculture industry, planning and advising aquaculture farmers. She knows first hand the challenges of running a young, start-up company and is dedicated to its success.

As well as playing a strategic role in integrating farm operators with fund managers, May has also established partnerships with aquaculture companies in Taiwan and Indonesia, has developed an effective working relationship with Malaysia Fisheries Department, Ministry of Finance Malaysia, Kedah Agro Industries Bhd, Sabah Economic Development Corporations (SEDCO) and local fund managers, and also developed markets for aquaculture farmers in Hong Kong and China.

"My work keeps me very busy and I have many projects running simultaneously. The Master of Business Administration from the University of Newcastle, Australia, taught me the skills to plan effectively and think strategically."

Professor Yuen Siew Hong - Malaysia
Master of Human Resource Management - Industrial Relations (2003)

Among other academic qualifications, a Master of Human Resource Management - Industrial Relations from the University of Newcastle in Australia has been critical to the career of Professor Dr. Yuen Siew Hong.

With more than 25 years experience as an Aircraft Modification Engineering Designer, Quality Control Manager, trainer and consultant to many large organisations, he is now Adjunct Professor of United Business Institutes (a pre-eminent business school in Belgium), in charge of developing and supervising doctoral and masters degree programs within the Asia-Pacific Region.

"I am also actively involved in developing courses and lecturing in the fields of Total Quality Management, Organisation Behaviour, Knowledge Management, Operations Management and Performance Management. The Master of Human Resource Management – Industrial Relations from the University of Newcastle has been a very important aspect of my education and professional development."

Selfy Manueke - Indonesia Master of Human Resource Management - Industrial Relations (2000)

The academic areas of human resource management, public relations, professional ethics, communication and quality management systems occupy the time of Selfy Manueke, a Senior Lecturer at Manado State Polytechnic in North Sulawesi, Indonesia and graduate of the University of Newcastle in Australia. She has also led a Marketing Study Program from 2005 to 2008 for the institution's Business Administration Department.

Selfy chose to study at the University of Newcastle in Australia after meeting one of the University’s representatives and being presented with clear and helpful information about studying and living in Newcastle. She is so impressed with Newcastle’s academic stature as well as its relaxed lifestyle, that she will soon return to undertake a PhD in Education.

"My degree qualification has helped me further my career, given me confidence as a lecturer and the knowledge to arrange and develop key research projects and study programs within my institution. I intend to take further study in human resources, this time focused on education, specifically on assessing performance of teachers in higher education."

LIU Huan (Vivian) - Singapore Master of Business Administration (2004)

Vivian Liu, a Senior Accountant in Silicon Laboratories (NASDAQ:SLAB) in Singapore, has a career that she loves. She oversees the financial status of the parent company and its worldwide subsidiaries, monitors revenue and expenses and consolidates financial reports at month and year end. An important element of her role is to assist in developing sound business strategies and increase stakeholder's value by providing professional and reliable financial and accounting service to corporate management.

The turning point in her accounting career was graduating with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Newcastle at its Singapore campus. She now has the knowledge, confidence and networks to make strong progress in her career.

"The University of Newcastle provides value-added academic programs in Singapore and I was fortunate to have the benefit of that. I had to quickly improve my English writing and oral presentation skills and to manage my time effectively to cope with a tight study schedule and a demanding full-time job at the same time. It was a big challenge for me, but most certainly worthwhile."
