"Beyond Borders" - Careers Seminar
Approximately 50 students attended this year's "Beyond Boarders" International Careers Seminar which was held on Wednesday 14 August from 12.30 - 3pm in the Treehouse on the Callaghan campus.
The seminar is designed to provide students with the knowledge and tools to motivate, inspire and encourage them to broaden their horizons and explore the various international employment opportunities that are available to them.
The four presenters were from a variety of backgrounds ranging from cross cultural communication, social media, recruitment and career development. Mariette Rups-Donnelly from Powerhouse Presentations facilitated the afternoon and delivered an excellent talk about cross cultural communication and how a student should understand the culture they are in along with presenting themselves in an appropriate context when in a different culture for a job interview.
John Edwards is a highly experienced and passionate e-Business Marketer, Consultant and Lecturer and spoke on how to use social media to the student's advantage when finding employment. Mr James Tocci, General Manager from Hudson Global Resources and an Alumni of this Faculty, gave an update on the international employment market along with tips on how a typical graduate recruitment program works in the corporate world and finally our own Dr Victor Quirk, an International Careers Counsellor gave a very interesting presentation on how to research prospective offshore labour markets and what the University Careers Service has to offer students.
During the lunch break students had an opportunity to network and speak directly to the presenters along with visiting booths set up by iLead, Alumni and Careers.
Nick Barham from the Centre for Teaching and Learning assisted at this event by filming the seminar and is in the process of putting together four vignettes of each presentation which will be placed on the Faculty website as a reference to the Seminar.
The Faculty is already planning for 2015!
