Faculty Staff Member Wins Prestigious Award

The Faculty would like to congratulate Shaun McCarthy on his recent Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Staff Member of the Year Award.

The WIL Awards are funded by External Relations (Office of the Advancement of Engaged Learning) and recognise outstanding contributions made by staff and students to work-integrated learning activities across the University and within the community.

Shaun is the Director of the University of Newcastle Legal Centre (UNLC) and his involvement in WIL during his time in this role has been significant. He has supervised law students at the Law on the Beach advice clinics since their inception in 2004, and in 2006 he introduced regular evening legal advice clinics for the community to access. Both of these clinics give law students the valuable opportunity to work towards solutions for real clients experiencing real legal issues. This hands-on experience for students is the very embodiment of WIL.

Of particular significance for Shaun's 2011 WIL Award is his supervision of the Legal Seminars for International Students. These seminars are an opportunity for Professional Program law students to put into practice their learning as they deliver legal information to international students in an accessible way. These seminars fulfil a crucial function as it is vital for these students to explain legal concepts in plain English as they move from law school to the workplace.

The Faculty is proud of our record of implementing WIL activities for students, and Shaun McCarthy's award further consolidates our commitment to engaged learning in the University.

University Forges Partnership with Prestigious Private Education Provider

The University of Newcastle has forged a strong partnership with the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), one of Australia's most prestigious private higher education providers to deliver the Newcastle Business School's Bachelor of Business at the ICMS campus. The degree wil be undertaken at two locations: the first part of their Business degree at ICMS Manly and the final part at Callaghan Campus in Newcastle.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nicholas Saunders, said "The agreement provides a channel for students to study the Bachelor of Business in both Newcastle and Sydney and will strengthen the University's commitment to providing a rich learning experience."

International College of Management Sydney Managing Director, Frank Prestipino, said they would be welcoming both international and domestic students into the program.

The Pro Vice Chancellor of Business and Law, Professor Stephen Nicholas welcomed the important role of the Tourism Discipline staff and Newcastle Business School academic staff located at the ICMS campus to take a mentoring role, particularly in the area of research, with colleagues at ICMS.

Faculty Conjoint Awarded at Australian Educational Publishing Awards

The Faculty would like to congratulate Conjoint Fellow Bob Compton for his contribution to the award winning text Human Resource Management 7e.

The judges said:

"This publication impressed the judges with its accessible language, emphasis on ethics, student centred pedagogy, end of chapter features to promote learning, and 'thinking' icons that align the topics with the end of chapter learning features. The in-depth coverage of each topic and significant development from previous editions was also impressive."

Faculty Academics Receive Citations

On Tuesday the 16th of August, two of our star Academics attended the 2011 Australian Learning and Teaching Council awards at the Sydney Opera House. Dr Brendan Boyle and Dr Marcus Rodrigs, from the Newcastle Business School, were awarded with prestigious national citations from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for their outstanding contributions to student learning. This recognition of academics within the Newcastle Business School on a national stage demonstrates the commitment and positive attitude of our teaching staff towards the learning experience of their students.

Asia's Best B-School Awards

Newcastle Business School academic staff member Dr Ashish Malik received The Best Professor in Human Resource Management award at the 2nd Asia's Best B-School Awards ceremony held in Singapore on 22 July 2011. Asia's Best B-School Awards are presented by Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Asia along with the CMO Council USA as its Strategic Partner and Stars of the Industry Group, as a research partner. The Asia's Best B-School Award is a not-for-profit organisation managed by senior industry professionals in Asia. The awards recognise contributions made by an individual in their field as well as for being a role model for others. The event was attended by Vice-Chancellors and senior academic leaders from universities and educational institutes from countries including Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Nepal, UAE and HR Heads of various organisations in Asia.

The organiser's global research cell, which constitutes of professionals from Asian countries, identify a list of potential nominees based on primary data collected about the individual through public web sites and social media, student perceptions, and information from ex-students. The research cell submits their recommendations to the chair and a jury who then announce the award winners.

UoN on the front page of the Botswana Daily News

Three representatives from the Employment Relations and Human Resource Management Group have just returned from a very successful trip to Botswana. Dr Johanna Macneil and Professor Mark Bray taught the first three of a series of one-day training courses to senior public service managers. This is part of a program aimed at building institutional capacity in industrial relations, which involves collaboration with the Botswana Public Service College and the University of Botswana.

Professor Bray and Deputy President Rod Harrison (of the IR Commission of NSW and Fair Work Australia, and Chair of the ER and HRM Group's Advisory Committee) also addressed a High Level Symposium on Managing a Unionised Public Service. Professor Bray's contribution was picked up by the local media, with a brief television interview being broadcast on the evening news and a front page newspaper article.

In the newspaper article, Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, who attended the symposium, pointed out that the country is in the midst of challenges associated with the introduction of collective bargaining. Professor Bray advised that the Botswana government will need to take a strategic approach of managing its relationship with the unions and that the choice of strategy must be driven by more pluralistic values.
