Research at the Faculty of Health
The Faculty of Health has achieved outstanding results in major national competitive grants scheme funding in the past year, with income of 21 million in 2005, up from 15 million last year. Some of the Faculty's more recent successes include:
- 6.9 million dollars in cancer research funding from the NSW Cancer Institute over the next five years.
- $1.4 million in grant money for a type 2 diabetes and obesity prevention program, for rural Indigenous primary school aged children in NSW.
- A $26.44 million collaboration for research into asthma and airways.
- Half a million dollars over three years for research into the detection and management of dementia in general practice.
- $4.62 million over the next three years to continue the Women's Health Australia study, examining the health of over 40,000 Australian women in three generations over the past decade.
The Faculty of Health, at the University of Newcastle, is a beautiful place to work and study, set in a lush forest environment in the coastal city of Newcastle, one of the oldest cities in Australia. It is a regional centre with a strong industrial base that has helped to nurture and build an increasingly strong health research portfolio.
