Overview

Nursing is an exciting and dynamic career. It involves a 3 year formal University degree coupled with on site and hands on experiences in various General Ward, Community and Mental Health placements.. To choose a rural placement with the University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) will mean that you are placed in smaller non metropolitan locations and exposure to a wide variety of experiences is certain. According to our direct feedback from students, the major percentage of students will consider a career in a rural area after they have come to a rural setting to do their placement.

Employment opportunities for graduate nurses are excellent everywhere. Graduates may be employed as registered nurses in the public or private sector health-care system, including hospitals, clinics, industry, aged care facilities, community health-care agencies and mental health facilities. Graduates may also follow a career as a commissioned officer in the armed forces. The range of work areas include general nursing, medical/surgical, psychiatric/mental health, developmental disability, community health, rehabilitation, occupational health and safety, paediatrics, accident and emergency, women's health, operating theatres, aged care, palliative care and many others. You may be entitled to a scholarship or grant to assist your studies. You should consult with the University on application.

Placements and Locations

Depending on your year of study, you will be placed in locations from 2 weeks to 6 weeks at a time. You may have a preference of location where you go however this is not always guaranteed. You may even choose metropolitan, rural or interstate. Generally third year students have placements of six weeks plus a large amount of electronic tutorials.
