Moree

Moree is located on the junction of two major highways, the Newell and Gwydir highways, which makes assessing Moree very easy. Moree is approximately 607kms from Sydney, 504km from Newcastle and 480kms from Brisbane. The Moree Plains features a warm "subtropical continential" style climate, with fresh air and sub-artesian waters that reach natural temperatures of up to 41 degrees. Moree is an agricultural service town, economically dependant on cotton, wheat and cereal crops. Other agricultural pursuits include the sheep and cattle grazing, as well as contemporary olive crops. There also exists a large pecan nut farm 30km east of the town. Moree's town population is approximately 8500 people of which 18% are of Indigenous descent. (ABS 2001). The tribal region and people are Kamilaroi. The local people are referred to as Murris, not Kooris like their southern counterparts.

Moree District Health Service

Moree District Health Service provides acute medical, surgical and maternity inpatient services. Emergency Department, chemotherapy services and a range of diagnostic imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) and pathology services are available to non inpatients.

The Moree Plains Health Service is located in Alice Street, adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre and the Ambulance Station. The facility comprises of 52 beds which include 2 operating theatres, recovery ward, 8 bed non-acute Renal day dialysis unit and a surgical ward with 2 palliative wards. The Ground floor consists of a medical ward with a 4 bed acute care ware and a children's ward. An Obstetric unit is also located on the Ground floor. The accident and emergency ward is situated at the main entrance of the hospital. There are also the Radiology, Pathology and Sonography C/T scan departments attached to the Ground floor at the main entrance. The doctors within Moree provide a 24 hour on call emergency service to the hospital, on a rotational basis. The Moree Plains Health Service also boasts a large Community Health section. Included are support areas of Mental health, Drug and Alcohol, Early Childhood Centre, Aboriginal Maternal Health, Diabetes support, Physiotherapy, Audiology, Speech therapy, Dental health, Domiciliary Nursing team, Occupational therapy and Dietician services.

Moree Accommodation accommodation is located within close proximity (5 minutes walk) to the hospital and UDRH/RCS office, and also within close walking distance to the shops, medical centres and sporting facilities.
