Indigenous Health

Indigenous Australian peoples are people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and are accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in the community in which they live, or have lived.

The University Department of Rural Health and Rural Clinical School recognises and acknowledges Aboriginal people as the traditional owners and custodians of the land. The geographical area where the UDRH/RCS is located encompasses 14 traditional Aboriginal nations. With this in mind the UDRH/RCS is committed to building and maintaining active partnerships with Aboriginal people and ensuring that Aboriginal culture and protocol is acknowledged and respected. The life expectancy for Indigenous Australians is between 15 to 20 years below those of other Australians, therefore one of the four key areas of mandated core business for the UDRH/RCS is addressing Indigenous health issues.
