The Faculty of Health provides its students with modern health care facilities to help them with their studies. Listed below are some of the health care facilities.
The Faculty Office, including the office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, is located in the Bowman Building.
Located on the Callaghan Campus, it houses the Disciplines of Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Biochemistry and Nutrition and Dietetics and has large animal research facilities, support staff for the undergraduate medical education program, the main bioengineering workshop as well as educational facilities.
The Disciplines of Medical Radiation Science, Environmental and Occupational Health, Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy are located in the Hunter Building on the Callaghan Campus.
The Life Sciencs Building has shared teaching laboratories for students of the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Science and Information Technology. The building includes a lecture theatre, tutorial rooms and two floors of research laboratories.
The Faculty occupies one floor of the Clinical Sciencs Building. Other floors are committed to the oncology unit and service laboratories for the hospital. It is the academic base for the Disciplines of Psychiatry and Clinical Pharmacology. The Chairs in Palliative Care and Surgical Oncology are also located in New Med 2.
The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) is located in the David Maddison Building where students have access to the Hunter Area Health Service’s Gardiner Library, computer facilities and student services.
The Disciplines of General Practice and Health Behaviour Sciences are located on the Wallsend Hospital Campus.
The remaining medical Disciplines have been integrated into the John Hunter Hospital with the Chairs of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Medicine, Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgical Science and Reproductive Medicine located there.
John Hunter Hospital is the principal referral centre, teaching hospital and a community hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and beyond. It is the only trauma centre in NSW outside Sydney and has the busiest emergency department in the state.
John Hunter is the region's largest hospital with around 550 beds. Patients from the Hunter and beyond are referred to John Hunter for treatment in a range of specialities, including Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Cardiology and Cardiac surgery, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Kidney Transplants, Neonatal Intensive Care, Nephrology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Respiratory Medicine and Trauma.
It is located at New Lambton Heights, approximately five kilometres from the Callaghan Campus.
The Royal Newcastle Hospital is a 95-bed specialist hospital and a centre for bone and joint disorders.
Specialist orthopaedic, rheumatology, medical rehabilitation, urology, ophthalmology, diabetes and sexual health services are provided. Allied Health services provided include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, social work and speech pathology
Outpatient clinics and radiology services are also available on site.
The Newcastle Mater Misericordiae Hospital is owned by the Sisters of Mercy Singleton and has an agreement with Hunter Health to provide a comprehensive range of services, including 24 hour emergency care service, clinical haematology (blood), clinical pharmacology and toxicology (drugs and poisons), critical care, drug and alcohol, general and specialised surgical including plastic surgery, liaison psychiatry, medical, oncology (cancers), palliative and hospice care (care of the dying) and radiotherapy.
The Mater Hospital is the Hunter region's major centre for oncology (cancer) services, which include haematology, breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment and melanoma prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Belmont District Hospital is a 75-bed acute facility. The services include general medicine, general surgery, day surgery, CCU, gynaecology, neonatal, obstetrics and a 24-hour emergency department.
The range of Allied Health Services includes Physiotherapy, Social Work, Dietetics, Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy. Radiology and pathology services are provided by Hunter Health.
The Faculty has no full-time staff there but our clinicians act as Visiting Medical Officers, and medical students are allocated to the hospital for clinical rotations.
Formerly a centre for country clinical experience, Gosford Hospital became a teaching hospital of the Faculty in 1994. It is part of the Central Coast North Sydney Area Health Service’s complex of public hospitals with a total of 730 beds.
If you are undertaking a degree in one of the Health Science's programs, you may be placed throughout NSW and interstate in a range of settings.
These hospitals are used for medical students’ country attachments. A Clinical Supervisor oversees your work at the hospital with the assistance of other members of staff who act as tutors.
Several hundred specialists and general practitioners regularly teach students in their private offices. This provides a valuable opportunity for you to see a wider range of patients, closer to where they live, and at an earlier stage of illness. It also provides a valuable insight into patterns of practice not accessible within the teaching hospitals.
