What do you like about this degree?
It provides insight into the physics of how the technological world works. It is a constant challenge and the Electrical Engineering staff are of a remarkable caliber. It also provides a good balance of practical and theoretical components.
What sort of things does your program cover?
Power Electronics, Electric Machines, Programming Microcontrollers, Power Systems and Advanced Control Systems.
What was your motivation for applying for a UNISS scholarship?
To gain financial support and thus alleviate any stress caused to my family due to my university studies. I also saw the full year of the scheme as an opportunity for international travel. I will be taking full advantage of this opportunity in the near future.
What is it like to combine working with your sponsor and studying?
The UNISS program welds the life of a student with that of a professional engineer. Whilst studying you have opportunities to expand your horizons and gain valuable life experience as you grow up. UNISS provides a nurturing environment that allows you to live life to its fullest whilst gaining direction for your future career and life in general.
What is your current working role with your sponsor?
I am currently estimating the costs of new electrical infrastructure. The estimating section handles the estimation of projects generally in the order of millions of dollars. Whilst at Energy Australia I have also gained experience in general field work and Over Head power line design. I have developed greatly as a professional engineer during my experience with Energy Australia.
Have you found your work with your sponsor beneficial to your studies?
My involvement with Energy Australia has improved my understanding of key power systems concepts and the practical applications of power systems. My work placements have driven me to be more committed and vigilant in my studies. It also allows you to more fully appreciate university life.
What advice would you give other students considering applying for a UNISS scholarship?
Practice your interview skills and definitely apply.
What is the University of Newcastle like?
One of the most wonderful places in the world. Great people, great engineering faculty and a relaxed sea side atmosphere. The bands that play Bar On The Hill never cease to amaze me.
What is uni life like?
Life as a university student is enormously fun but challenging at the same time. I would recommend that everyone experienced life as a student at some time in there life. The mix of wild university events and high level studies certainly makes life interesting. University is more than just studies it’s a lifestyle.
What do you see yourself doing when you finish uni?
Anything! The sky is the limit for UNISS graduates.
