"Academic and Administrative managers are responsible and accountable for day-to-day OH&S within their areas of responsibility, and have the authority to fulfil those responsibilities. The Health and Safety Unit is available to consult and advise regarding specific OH&S matters and to assist with the development and implementation of OH&S system procedures and programs. The OH&S responsibilities of management at all levels, staff, students and contractors, are detailed further in the document 'Roles and Responsibilities for OH&S'". (University OH&S Policy - Item 3, Para 2)

It is recommended that you first take any OH&S issues/concerns to your direct Supervisor or Head of School. If you do not recieve satisfactory response at this level, please contact your local School/area Representative for further advice or referral to the Faculty OH&S Committee.

All University of Newcastle buildings have evacuation plans strategically located throughout each area that claerly indicate the nearest exit(s) and nominated assembly point(s) in the event of an emergency.

If you are unable to locate an evacuation plan for your building or believe there is a need for additional evacuation plans in your area, please contact your local School/area Representative for further advice and/or complete a Maintenance Request Form to initiate this process.

should I raise an OH&S issue?

All members of the university community are encouraged to regard accident prevention and working safety as both a collective and individual responsibility. The University of Newcastle is committed to providing an environment that maintains the health and safety of its staff, studnets and visitors. A situation, activity, behaviour or item poses a health and/or safety risk to any person should be reported ASAP.

All OH&S issues should first be directed to your immeduate Supervisor of Head of School who is responsible for ensuring that all significant risks associated with hazards in their operations are identified, controlled, registered and reviewed in consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

Should an OH&S issue remain unresolved, please contact your local School/area Representative for further advice or referral to the Faculty OH&S Committee.

is OH&S important?

The University of Newcastle is committed to providing an enviornment that maintains the health and safety of its staff, students and visitors. This commitment is expressed in its Occupational Health and Safety Policy. Good health and safety practice should form an integral part of each activity at the University whether it involves teaching, research or administrative functions.

should I bring issues to the OH&S Committee's attention?

All members of staff of the University of Newcastle are expected to preform their duties while adhearing to the obligations and standards set out in the Code of Conduct (for staff) and other current legislation. The main OH&S legislation which is relevant to University staff if the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 (NSW).

should I not ignore an OH&S issue?

The University of Newcastle recognises its corporate responsibility under the NSW OH&S Act (2000) and associated legislation. Managers and supervising academics have a key responsibility with regard to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of staff, students, contractors and visitors. In fulfilling this responsibility, manaers have a duty to provide and maintain so far as practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risks to health. As a consequence of this, the University encourages all members of the University community to regard accident prevention and working safely as a collective and individual responsibility.
