Social Marketing

Dr Fry completed her Honours Thesis (first class) in the area of social marketing. Her thesis titled "Behaviour modification strategies for changing adolescent attitudes towards smoking and reducing tobacco consumption: A meta-analysis" investigated the effectiveness of school-based smoking prevention programs in terms of which curricula (program) variables account for varying levels of success in reducing tobacco consumption amongst adolescents. The outcomes of this work have been presented at international (Social Marketing in Public Health) and national marketing (ANZAM & ANZMAC) conferences. Currently, she is developing a theory of branding the social idea, as well as a communication framework for social campaigns in terms of message effectiveness and testing this framework.

Advertising and Promotion

Dr Fry has previously worked within the advertising and film industry and brings a wealth of knowledge to the academic arena. She is currently teaching advertising and promotion. Her research area examines the application of advertising, branding and promotional activities to the social marketing arena; what criteria determine advertising effectiveness; and effectiveness of coupon advertising in Australia.

Marketing Education

Dr Fry has an interest in aspects of marketing education, especially the interaction of the knowledge media in marketing education. She is has also co-authored a paper examining the structural overview of undergraduate marketing education in Australia. These papers have been presented at national and overseas conferences. Establishing and monitoring the Honours program in Marketing and Enterprise at the University of Newcastle has also been an achievement.
