Kevin Orr

Newcastle founder, Kevin Orr, believes that if you share your trip and help the environment you should be rewarded for it. While carpooling with his wife Kevin noticed he was adding an extra 30 minutes to his commute because they worked in opposite directions from home. So Liftango was born, an app that allows commuters to find others who travel in the same direction and at similar times. Liftango promotes sustainable travel and provides data on key metrics, such as how much space they save, CO2 emissions reduced and even friendships made.

Kevin and his Co-Founder Trystan Eeles successfully applied to do the Slingshot accelerator program, where they learned the science of building a startup and how to create and test a minimum viable product. Liftango now services the University of Newcastle as its rideshare solution of choice, eclipsing the previous solution’s five year averages in only a matter of days. It helps students and staff with similar journeys to share rides with and rewards them with guaranteed parking spots and gift vouchers.

Kevin will be telling this startup story from the very beginning, warts and all! Come hear about the early days seeking corporate interest, to when he decided to quit his corporate job to focus solely on Liftango, and where he believes transportation will be in the next 5 years.

About Startup Stories

Startup Stories takes place every Thursday from 1pm at University of Newcastle's coworking space Three76 Hub on Hunter Street. Over BYO lunch, a startup founder talks candidly about their experience as an entrepreneur and business owner – the highs, the lows, the wins, the mistakes, the whole enchilada. Startup Stories provides real-life examples of the different stages of the startup journey, creating a forum for startups to share and learn but also for the community to see tangible evidence of entrepreneurship making a difference in our region.
