Human Migration and Disaster Management
The Newcastle Law School and CIFAL Newcastle invite you to attend a public seminar on Human Migration and Disaster Management by Dr Edna Co, Professor of Public Administration at the University of the Philippines and the Executive Director of CIFAL Manila.
Professor Co, who will be on campus at the invitation of the Vice-Chancellor as a President’s Visiting Fellow, will explore the global challenges of the current unprecedented levels of human migration within the context of disaster management.
The Philippines is the third worst-affected by disasters that lead to displacement. While forced displacement and migration are often protracted and recurring, human mobility and disaster management pose continuing challenges to leaders and citizens. Professor Co will draw on her extensive experience in migration and social development, public administration, citizenship participation in governance and gender equity to consider the challenges of human migration and disaster management as we work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030.
Professor Co is currently the Executive Director of CIFAL Manila and the University of the Philippines Centre for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS), the university system-wide interdisciplinary policy centre. Serving as a hub for the Asia-Pacific region, leveraging UP's disciplinary strengths in areas such as public policy, migration and development.
After the seminar there will be afternoon tea and an opportunity to network with Professor Co.
