You Have to Let Out the Scream
This talk examines the circumstances leading up to Mr Rudd's apology to the Forgotten Australians, those 500,000 children who grew up in Australian institutions in the twentieth century. Professor Read then traces how the exhibition Inside: Life in Children’s Homes and Institutions was conceived and the unforgettable result.
Professor Read began his career in Australian Indigenous History, with a special interest in oral testimony. After working for some years with Aboriginal adults separated from their families, his interests have widened to include the history and meaning of Australians' attachments to sites and land. He has additional interests and publications in museum studies, oral history, biography, and the history of Latin America, especially Cuba and Chile.
