The Newcastle/Hunter Studies Symposium will showcase research on Newcastle and the Hunter being conducted in the humanities and social sciences.

Presented by the University of Newcastle Humanities Research Institute, this is the first time the present generation of researchers looking at our region have come together to discuss their work. The event is part of a broader project to collect past and present scholarship on the city and the region. The symposium will showcase the breadth and depth of studies being undertaken as well as introducing this work to the community and providing an occasion to discuss how future studies of the city and region might proceed.

The symposium will include a panel discussion titled The Place of Newcastle and the Hunter in History, chaired by University of Newcastle History Research Academic and Lecturer, Dr Julie McIntyre. The panel will feature Senior History Lecturer Dr Nancy Cushing and Gionni DiGravio from Cultural Collections at the University's Auchmuty Library in conversation with Monash University Professor Erik Eklund, one of Australia's leading historians of regions and industry.

The Newcastle/Hunter Studies Symposium is FREE and open to scholars as well as the general public. It is held in conjunction with the Treasures of the Macquarie Era exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery.
