What are your fears and hopes about new directions in biotechnology? A series of Science in the Pub sessions, where people can meet scientists and ask them about new technologies and their impacts on their lives, is being launched in Newcastle on Wednesday night, 13 February at the Grand Hotel.
Presented by the University of Newcastle and 1233 ABC Newcastle, and funded by the Australian Department of Industry and Innovation, Science in the Pub invites members of the community to have a drink and a chat with scientists who work with new technology, genetics and fertility.
Nine Science in the Pub sessions will be held in regional centres around the country, looking at topics such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, stem cells and genetically modified foods.
Hosted by Jill Emberson (Mornings, 1233 ABC Newcastle), Science in the Pub will be a panel discussion followed by questions and then a casual chat with University of Newcastle scientists Pablo Moscato, Rodney Scott and John Aitken.
John Aitken is the NSW Scientist of the Year and an expert on human fertility. Pablo Moscato and Rodney Scott combine powerful computer technology and a deep knowledge of genetics to develop patient-tailored treatment for many diseases such as breast and prostate cancer, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and MS.
This is a free event, over 18s only. No booking necessary.
