Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project (KWRP) covers 1590 hectares on three sites in the Hunter River estuary. It is one of the largest active coastal rehabilitation projects in Australia. KWRP was initiated in 1993 to compensate for the loss of fish, shorebird and other wildlife habitat in the Hunter estuary caused by 200 years of draining, filling and clearing.

Despite habitat losses, Kooragang Wetlands remains a biodiversity 'hot spot' of flora and fauna, and are internationally recognised, being part of the Ramsar-listed Hunter Estuary Wetlands and home to species protected under bilateral migratory bird agreements JAMBA and CAMBA. 

Kooragang City Farm, situated on Ash Island, was initiated in 1995 as part of the KWRP to investigate and demonstrate agricultural activities that protect and enhance natural ecosystems.

Visitors are welcome to explore Ash Island at any time, with the Information Centre open 10am to 4pm weekdays, and also the third Sunday of the month, when the regular planting days occur.

The community is invited to join the regular 'Koora Gang' volunteers on these planting days as they continue their regeneration efforts, extending the remnants of rainforest and riparian vegetation that once flourished on non-tidal areas of Ash Island.

A free morning tea or lunch is provided depending on start time which is either 8:30 or 9:30 am. The day finishes at 11:30am or 12:30pm.
