The University of Newcastle Alumni Awards recognise professional excellence, innovation, creativity, exceptional leadership and those who inspire others in a range of fields through local, national or international service.

The nine recipients across eight categories were announced at the 37th annual Alumni Awards Gala dinner on 17 October 2012 at Newcastle City Hall.

For 1959 Newcastle Teachers College graduate Ms Jennie Thomas AM , her long history of local and international community work was acknowledged with the presentation of the Alumni Award for Exceptional Community Service. 

This award recognises the work of an outstanding Alumni member who has made a significant contribution to their community which also enhances the University of Newcastle / Community relationship. Ms Thomas received the award for her philanthropic support of charities, organisations and individuals both here and abroad.
