On Sunday, 8 September keen paddlers will take to the Hunter River for the annual Hunter Paddle Challenge.

This year the event has been opened up to a wider range of crafts, including but not limited to surf boats, dragon boats and outriggers.

The Hunter Paddle Challenge offers the choice of a full 60km or half 30km course. The route traverses the scenic upper reaches of the Hunter River from Lorn near Maitland through farm land to historic Morpeth and on to Raymond Terrace, where the shorter course begins. The paddlers then continue to Hexham, passing by nature reserves at Ash Island, finishing at the river's end at Stockton.

Organised by the Hunter Wetlands Centre, all proceeds from the event will go towards supporting environmental projects undertaken by the Wetlands.
