Alexander the Great: 2000 years of treasures is an exciting and prestigious classical culture exhibition being hosted by the Australian Museum in Sydney from November 2012 until early March 2013. The exhibition features the largest collection of treasures ever to come to Australia from the world famous State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia.
Two University of Newcastle students, Michelle Schmitzer and Emma Elliott will be conducting public programs included in the events running alongside the Alexander the Great exhibition.
In early January and February Michelle will be running 'Making Mosaics' for children as well as a mosaic workshop for adults at the Museum.
Currently studying Fine Art, Michelle has ten years' experience in the mosaic industry. She has conducted classes at Hunter Community College and runs regular workshops at her shop Dynamic Mosaic Supplies.
Michelle has extensive experience with the design and development of commissioned mosaic art including the production of a number of larger projects.
Making Mosaics on 8 and 11 January is recommended to children aged between five and ten years of age. This series of mosaic workshops will teach children the ancient art of mosaics with each child creating their own Alexandrian inspired piece to take home.
The Mosaic Workshop for Adults is a two day intensive workshop suited for beginners and intermediate level. This event also includes an audio-visual lecture Alexander the Great: Mythology and Iconography of Horses in the Ancient World presented by another Bachelor of Fine Art student, Emma Elliot.
Emma's presentation synthesises a diverse range of artistic, theoretical, historical and literary sources with a direct relation to the topic. The lecture will explore how audiences perceive and interpret these sources and the relevance they have on artistic practices now.
