Jason Van Genderen's short film Mankind Is No Island took out the top honours at Tropfest New York in 2008. Telling a story about the nature of homelessness, the film was shot entirely on a Nokia mobile phone using found signage on the streets of New York and Sydney.
With his #Shareaword project, the Central Coast filmmaker, together with Nikon Australia, has opened the concept to a wider community. Participants are invited to take a photo of an interesting word and upload the image to smartphone photo sharing service Instagram tagged with #shareaword and @nikon_australia. The most creative entry each week wins a Nikon Coolpix S800c Smart camera.
Van Genderen will thread the words together into another short film which will premiere at Tropfest 2013. This behind the scenes video shows how Jason found the words that inspired the #Shareaword promotional film.
Entries for the competition close on January 14. Tropfest 2013 will be held at The Domain, Sydney on Sunday, February 17, 2013.
