Cruise to Raise Funds for Hospital in East Timor
Local GP and University of Newcastle Conjoint Lecturer Robyn Fried worked as a volunteer at Bairo Pite Hospital in East Timor for four weeks in 2012. She was overwhelmed by how much is needed to help this hospital function and provide good quality medical care.
East Timor battles the third highest rate of childhood malnutrition in the world, and the Timorese nation loses one mother each day during childbirth. In addition 50% of the population suffer from or are carriers of tuberculosis.
Since Robyn's return, she has been fundraising to help Bairo Pite Hospital. The cost of keeping one patient in a bed for one day is $10. A fundraising cruise on Sunday, 14 April is aiming to raise enough money to fund one bed for nearly twelve months.
The Lake Macquarie cruise on the yacht Margarita, includes a sumptuous buffet lunch, so come along and enjoy a fabulous day of sailing, swimming, feasting and skurfing.
Cost of the day is $120, with all proceeds going to Bairo Pite Hospital. There is limit of 28 places.
