The Beanstalk organic food cooperative in Mayfield was established in 2004 by three friends who were concerned about the lack of access to healthy and safe food for the community. From its humble beginnings on a veranda, the organisation has flourished. More than 100 members now have access to affordable, seasonal, healthy and local produce. The coop supports many local organic farmers each week.
The basis of Beanstalk is a weekly box of fresh, organic, seasonal and reasonably priced vegetables and fruit. A range of fresh produce (milk, feta, eggs and honey), breads and dried goods are also available.
The Beanstalk stall is held every Tuesday afternoon at the St Andrews Church Hall in Church St, Mayfield. This is where members gather to pick up their produce, meet people, get information, and get involved as a volunteer.
Beanstalk is always looking for volunteers to help out with running the co-op. Not only is volunteering a great way to get to know other members, every three hours of volunteering entitles members to $10 work of 'volunteer beans' to be used at the stall. Beans are calculated monthly and the credit goes directly to their Beanstalk shop account.
Opportunities for volunteering are varied, so there is sure to be something for every member's skills - including setting up the stall, contacting farmers and ordering produce, writing newsletter articles, participating in the management committee, organising events and writing grants, food and recipe research.
