ABC Open (Hunter) is working to create awareness and highlight the issues faced by grandparents as parents and other kinship carers.
There are 38,000 children known to be in the care of grandparents or other relatives in Australia today, but many more are unknown as they are in informal arrangements. These families, often struggling, may be unaware of what support is available to them.
Grandparent carers from Rivergum Grandparents as Parents support group (GAPS) at Raymond Terrace shared their stories with ABC Open, bringing to light the difficult circumstances many of these families face.
