Riding the Airwaves
2NURFM - located within the University of Newcastle - is the region’s only locally owned and operated community radio station. Since it began broadcasting in 1978, 2NURFM has been providing listeners in the Newcastle region with easy listening music along with quality local programming and news and a focus on the promotion of community events.
2NURFM is funded by listener donations as well as some sponsorship from local businesses. Its staff is made up primarily of volunteers - around 70 of them - who help with everything ranging from technical support, on-air presenting and general administration of the station.
Having 2NURFM located on the University’s Callaghan campus allows it to play a central role in helping to train and give experience working in a real radio station to students looking to move into that field at the completion of their studies.
The internship for Communications students majoring in journalism began a few years ago with only three candidates. Today, 2NURFM is playing host to eight University of Newcastle students who are working in the station’s newsroom under the guidance of News Director Ian Crouch.
Working in the newsroom gives the students experience in researching, writing, producing and presenting local news stories in a bona fide production environment - skills that give students that much needed edge when it comes to challenging for highly competitive positions at other media companies following the completion of their internships at 2NURFM.
You can listen to 2NURFM on 103.7FM in the Newcastle region or worldwide via the live-stream on their website, where you will also find more information on their programs, presenters and how you can get involved.
