Why study workplace health and safety at UoN?

The degree was established in 2012 following rationalisation of two highly successful and well-established Masters programs - the Master of Occupational Health and Safety and the Master of Workplace Injury Management and Occupational Rehabilitation. It is delivery on-line and may be undertaken from within or outside Australia.

The Master of Workplace Health and Safety is accredited by the Australian Occupational Health and Safety Education Accreditation Board. As one of only five universities to meet the strict accreditation criteria, the University of Newcastle is helping to set the benchmark for workplace health and safety education in Australia. This accreditation means you can apply for registration as a workplace health and safety professional after graduating.

Accreditation by the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) will also be given to the Master of Workplace Health and Safety. You will be able to become a graduate member of IOSH, which is an internationally recognised accrediting body of workplace health and safety degrees.

Be equipped with valuable and highly transferable skills

The Master of Workplace Health and Safety is a 120-unit postgraduate coursework program that provides training in occupational health, safety, injury management and rehabilitation. It can be completed wholly on-line as there is no requirement for on-campus attendance.

The program prepares graduates for work in the preparation and implementation of occupational health and safety programs at the workplace. It is designed to develop advanced knowledge, critical understanding and problem solving approaches to the complex ranges of issues and processes associated with practice in occupational health and safety and workplace injury management.

Students will, in many cases, be working in a variety of roles within this area, in positions of managerial or professional responsibility, through which they are required to develop policies and strategies in response to the OH&S and workplace injury management needs of their organisations.

Note: this program is subject to final University approval.

The Master of Workplace Health and Safety (MWHS) is a 120-unit, AQF Level 9-compliant program. Students undertake 100 units of Core Courses and 20 units of Directed Courses.

Entry requirements

Entry requirement for the Masters qualification is a relevant bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution.

Provision is made for an exit award - the Graduate Diploma in Health and Safety - after completion of 80 units within the Masters program. Candidates who elect to transfer to the exit will not be eligible for readmission to the Masters program.

The embedded Graduate Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety will be a 40-unit, AQF Level-8 compliant program. Special entry into the Graduate Certificate will be offered to those with relevant non-university qualifications and at least 3 years relevant professional experience in a designated health and safety role, approved for this purpose by the Pro Vice-Chancellor. Admission to the Masters program following completion of the Graduate Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety for special entry students will require a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher.
