Why study leadership and management education at UoN?

The Master of Leadership and Management in Education program at the University of Newcastle is a cutting edge, practically oriented, highly relevant master's degree program for education of leaders and managers. This program has an innovative structure which enables students to choose either a school, higher education or TVET leadership specialisation. The Master of Leadership and Management in Education program has attracted students from all Australian states and territories, and over 34 countries. The program has been completed, not only by teachers and school executives, but also by senior nurses, nursing managers, military personnel, and business managers.

Be equipped with valuable and highly transferable skills

The Master of Leadership and Management in Education program is focused on exposing students to innovative research and practice in the leadership, management and administration of educational institutions. Taught by experienced practitioners and active researchers in the field, this program explicitly integrates theory and practice to enable graduates to apply the latest research to refine and improve practice in their own contexts. Many alumni of the program have been successful in gaining promotion and/or admission to doctoral study.

To qualify for the Master of Leadership and Management in Education program students must successfully complete 80 units which consists of:

  • Core Courses (20 units)
  • A Specialisation - School Leadership, Higher Education Leadership or TVET Leadership (40 Units)
  • Electives (20 units).

Each specialisation requires the successful completion of:

  • Compulsory Courses (10 units)
  • Directed Courses (30 units) or Educational Research Directed Courses (40 units - see note below).

Please note the following about the Educational Research Directed Courses option:

  • Program Convenor permission is required to enrol in Educational Research Directed Courses.
  • Students must enrol in EDUC6048, EDUC6026 and EDUC6027 and one other research methodology course.
  • 10 units of electives will be used to make up the units in the Educational Research Directed Courses.
  • The Minor Thesis is to be completed in the area of the specialisation.
