The University of Newcastle, in consultation with the Australian aviation industry, has developed this program to produce graduates with the knowledge, skill and vision to master the challenge of changing management practice in the aviation industry. Combining specialist human factor topics with a choice of general management courses, the Master of Aviation Management builds your critical thinking and analysis skills, and allows you to create a personalised program that will be relevant across aviation and the general transportation industry as well as any other 'high risk/high reliability' industries.
Completed over one year or longer if preferred, the Master of Aviation Management is a unique program that combines courses in the Master of Business Administration with specific aviation management courses including human factors in the workplace, aviation psychology and safety management. This combination helps you develop your leadership and communication potential while strengthening your professional aviation skills, paving the way for possible promotion or change in specialisation.
If you are interested in studying courses within the Master of Aviation Management, without the commitment of enrolling into the whole degree program, you can do so. Choose one or two courses that you are interested in to enhance your current skills and stay up to date with the latest developments and research in aviation human factors and business management.
The Master of Aviation Management enables you to study both business topics and aviation aspects concurrently. To complete the program you must complete eight courses including the following compulsory aviation related courses:
Human factors in aviation systems - this covers a review of basic human factors principles and implications such as cockpit automation and ergonomics and display in the cockpit
Crew resource management - promotes communication, leadership, decision making, situational awareness and conflict resolution
Then select three of the following aviation courses, or take all four:
Advanced human factors in aviation - introduction to the aspects of methodology in research regarding human factors
Human factors in specialised operations - facilitates understanding of the contribution of human factors in various specialisations within the aviation industry
Safety management systems - a thorough examination of safety management in the avaiation industry including regulation, implementation and maintenance of safety management sytems
Aviation training and instruction - principles of instruction in adult education applied in aviation settings.
In addition to the aviation courses, you will be able to choose two or three courses from a vast array of business management topics in accordance with your interests and career path.

The understanding and insight you gain from the Master of Aviation Management will benefit you as it has done many others, including commercial and military pilots, air traffic controllers and maintenance engineers. As well as assisting you to pursue your chosen career route, you'll find this qualification eases the transition between specialties, for example in moving from the military to government or consultation activities, or moving between commercial aviation organisations.
