Why study architecture at UoN?

The Master of Architecture degree is a two year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program. The Master of Architecture can only be undertaken following the successful completion of the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) program or equivalent, if registration as an Architect and the practice of Architecture is desired.

The Master of Architecture is fully accredited. Please refer to the Professional Accreditation section for further detail. The program has regularly received high commendation from professional accreditation bodies.

The program welcomes and benefits from the presence of a high percentage of International Students. The University of Newcastle is ideally located in Australia's largest regional city, enjoying a beautiful environment and relaxed lifestyle. A very comprehensive range of cultural, sporting, educational and recreational activities are enhanced by easy access to Sydney.

Students wishing to study part-time in the Master of Architecture program are strongly advised to consult the Program Convenor.

Be equipped with valuable and highly transferable skills

The School of Architecture and Built Environment has developed an innovative approach to architectural education. From the beginning of the program, students work on projects that reflect real design problems met by architects in practice and use them to develop the knowledge and competence required of a graduate entering the profession. Working usually in small groups with tutors, as in a design office, students learn to creatively integrate the contributions of various disciplines to the effective practice of architecture. The basic building needs of work, home and public life from the themes of design problems covered in the program. The Architecture design studio provides students with personal-work-stations and computer network connections to allow participation in the synergy of a shared learning experience.

The program requires the completion of 160 units.

Responsive teaching and real-world experiences

Students are encouraged to take a break of at least one year between the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and the Master of Architecture in order to travel and/or gain experience in architect practices in Australia and overseas.

There is a diverse range of career opportunities for architecture graduates. As well as a career in private architectural practice, opportunities that may require further study include careers in town planning, construction, project management, property development, overseas aid, infrastructure planning, research, journalism, criticism, restoration and conservation.

The program has an excellent record of preparing students for employment, with graduates continually sought by architecture practices within Australia and internationally.
