Set designer

A set designer methodically investigates designs and oversees the construction of sets, studios, props, scenery and other visual aids for theatre, film and television. Set designers have an artistic flair and are yet able to combine practical and artistic skills to communicate the desired visual effect.

Set designers may be involved in the installation of trade exhibitions, permanent shop displays, museum exhibits and other interpretive displays.

They may be involved in the following tasks:

  • Design sets and props and produce sketches, plans, working drawing and models after seeking advise from production directors and other creative artists
  • take into consideration budget, material, lighting, sound and other technical implications on design in line with requirements of the director or producer
  • supervise qualified tradespersons who construct the sets, and direct set assistant, set managers, backstage personnel on matters relating to design interpretations and operations
  • design costumes
