Oceanography is the broad title given to the study of ocean - its chemical composition, marine life, botany, geography and movements. Oceanographers are also interested in the air above the ocean, the earth below it and any other natural systems that interact with it. Typically, they have post-graduate qualifications and split their time between the field and the laboratory, where they use a variety of different equipment including modelling software. Career opportunities exist in the fisheries industry, in natural resource management, conservation, mining, shipping, tourism and in research, however positions are limited and competitive.
