Career

Humanitarian Logistician

Humanitarian logisticians plan for and coordinate the flow of goods which are used for humanitarian purposes. This may include for example, bulk medical supplies to regions affected by war and conflict or food and building supplies to areas devastated by natural disasters. Professionals in this occupation are expert in the typical aspects of logistics planning; scheduling, budgeting, stakeholder liaison and negotiation but also must respond to and anticipate extraordinary cultural and political factors and unreliable or non-existent infrastructure. They may also be involved with projects to create infrastructure such as hospitals, water supplies and power. Employment opportunities exist with government and non-government relief and aid organisations and with private contractors specialising in this field. Qualifications in logistics are necessary for this type of role. The ability to speak another language along with knowledge and interest in development studies, sociology and politics are also very highly regarded.
