Geographic Information System Officer/Analyst

Geographic information systems (GIS's) are computer software packages which model the physical characteristics of particular environments. They provide information for planning in terms of soil quality, potential flood areas and environmental hazards and are utilised by resource companies, commercial property developers, environmental consultancies, councils and government departments. GIS officers and analysts play operational and facilitation roles with GIS systems, entering data, managing, maintaining and analysing it, often providing written recommendations and consulting on planning issues.

Bachelor qualifications are sufficient for entry-level positions in this field where practical experience and on the job training play an important role. GIS analysts/officers may find a particular facet of planning with which to specialise though require a thorough broad knowledge of environmental planning issues.
