Forensic Accountant

Forensic accountants specialise in interpreting business and financial issues and reporting on them in such a way that is acceptable in a court of law. This type of accounting is usually only necessary in the event of a law suit or some other type of court proceedings, particularly when illegal activities are believed to have taken place. Forensic accountants are skilled investigators who know how to detect abnormalities and trends in financial data. They may work with investigating police and legal professionals and require good communication skills as they may be required to interview relevant parties and also present their findings in court. Because of the highly specialised nature of this type of work, experience is crucial as are qualifications in accounting. Employment opportunities exist within government departments (such as the Australian Taxation Office), law and accounting firms. Insurance companies and banks may also hire forensic accountants.
