Diabetes Educator

A Diabetes Educator helps people who have or are at risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes education helps diabetics learn about the disease and develop the skills they need to manage it successfully by modifying their own behaviour. This process involves the diabetic, his family or caregiver and the diabetes educator. The goal of diabetes education is to help the diabetic achieve and maintain optimal health and better quality of life while reducing the need for costly medical treatment.

Diabetes Educators require completion of an undergraduate degree in areas such as nursing or nutrition, but can also come from any other health related field. To then become a Credentialed Diabetes Educator, there will also often be a requirement for postgraduate study in an approved course in diabetes education and care.
