Developmental Chemist

Developmental chemists work to produce a wide variety of chemical products from pharmaceuticals and cleaning agents to personal care products such as shampoo and cosmetics. This type of work sometimes involves innovating entirely new products bust also modifying and improving existing products and designing and overseeing the manufacturing processes for both individual chemicals and the final product of which they are a part.

Developmental chemists perform a large part of their work in a laboratory setting though are also required to present their work to non-scientific clients. Usually, product development is a process which involves a multi-disciplinary team containing sales, marketing and business personnel, manufacturers and toxicology and environmental advisors. For this reason developmental chemists need to have excellent communication skills and a flexible and integrative approach to their work.
